Students from Dubai’s GEMS Modern Academy took part in the 2021 iCAN! Children’s Summit, which took place at the school and at the India Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
The Summit included workshops, entrepreneurship simulations, performances and presentations that inspired its attendees to think about how they can be the change they want to see when it comes to sustainability and safeguarding the future of people and the planet – all aligned closely with one of Expo’s key themes.
The three-day event was organised by Design for Change, one of the largest global movements that empowers children to unleash their iCAN! Superpower. Pioneered by Kiran Bir Sethi, an education reformer from India, and led by GEMS Modern Academy in partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers and Industry (FICCI), as part of the celebration of iCAN! Expo 2020 Dubai Summit-National, the Summit gave students across UAE and the world the opportunity to propose sustainable changes.
Eriyat Devi, iCAN! Coordinator and Assistant Dean of Studies in Entrepreneurship, said: “Children keep telling us that they are ready to be the harbingers of change, and this summit will help people to get inspired by their solutions to some of the greatest challenges faced by the world today.”
Students attending the Summit were treated to a workshop and performance by award-winning comedian and TedEx speaker, Nitinn R Mirrani.
Nargish Khambatta, Principal / CEO of GEMS Modern Academy and Vice President – Education, commented: “The Summit is a great way for us to round off the calendar year and look towards a positive 2022. Sustainability is a key concern for our students and school community, so this fun and engaging event taking place alongside students from other nations is a fantastic opportunity for them to share knowledge and ideas. It really reflects the collaborative spirit of Expo and its focus on the future of our planet.”
