GEMS alumni cousins draw inspiration from COVID crisis

Cousins Shania and Sagarika Dias were looking forward to a 2020 full of new experiences, varsity life abroad and embarking on chosen careers and like so many GEMS alums this year the effects of the pandemic thwarted their plans – that is until they decided to create a stationery and fashion brand, Dela by Dias.

The pair both have a love of the arts, which is rooted in their schooling with GEMS. Twenty year-old Shania attended Wellington International School (WIS) and then Jumeirah College, while 23 year-old Sagarika, went to Our Own Girls Sharjah (OOS) before heading to American University Sharjah to study Architecture.

Shania says: “We wanted to create something relevant to the times that we are living in. Our prints reflect our different yet complementary artistic styles and we wanted to apply our talents to create something current and useful.” Shania credits her flair with fine arts to her A’ level in Art which she took at JC. Shania’s style is very graphic and linear, using a mix of techniques such as etching and printing on the range, while Sagarika’s love for architecture is most noticeable in the ‘Quarantine Collection’ where her relatable reflections on people in spaces and lock-down life in Dubai are depicted in a witty and wearable way.  The pair jointly collaborate on all the designs and products, sharing all the responsibilities of their first venture together.
