In its fifth year, the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2019 was awarded under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.
The Global Teacher Prize, a $1 million award is the largest prize of its kind. It aims to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession as well as to highlight the important role teachers play in society.
Finalists were selected from over 10,000 nominations and applications from 179 countries. All 10 finalists were invited to Dubai for the Award ceremony at the Global Education & Skills Forum (GESF), where this year’s winner, Peter Tabichi, was announced live on stage by Hollywood A-lister Hugh Jackman in a red-carpet gala event.
Prior to the announcement, “The Assembly: A Global Teacher Prize Concert” was held as a thank you to teachers all around the world for the unsung work they do every day. Spectators enjoyed performances by Rita Ora, Liam Payne, and Little Mix. Hugh Jackman also made a surprise appearance and wowed the audience with an extract from his film, “The Greatest Showman.”
